Advising FAQ

Do I need an advisor?

Yes. All students who have declared a major in one of the department’s programs (EET, GLY, MMET, PENG, PHY) require advising.  You will not be able to register until your advisor has removed the advising hold.

How do I find out who my advisor is?

You can find the name and contact information for your advisor by contacting Linda Gee (859) 572-5309.

How can I get an advising appointment?

You can set up an appointment by phoning or emailing your advisor.  Or you can set up an appointment directly by visiting faculty during their office hours; office hours are normally posted on or near their office door.  If you don’t know how to find your advisor, you can obtain contact information from the NKU Directory.

How do I declare Physics or Geology as my major?

You first want to visit the Office of the Registrar, located in the Lucas Administrator Building, to get the required form.  Then you must have the department chair sign your request for a change of major and return it to the Office of the Registrar.  The process is quick and easy.

What is the difference between a BS and a BA in Physics?

The BS is a more thorough course regiment designed to prepare students for graduate studies in Physics.  The BA allows for added flexibility for those students wanting to work on another major while studying Physics.  The BS requires PHY 301 Advanced Laboratory, PHY 410 Electromagnetic Theory and PHY 460 Quantum Mechanics whereas the BA does not.  Please see our Majors page under programs for more details.

What kind of jobs are available after graduating from a physics program?

A good resource for getting an idea of post graduation opportunities is the American Institute of Physics AIP.  They have job listings for careers in physics.  Although, Physics majors are not limited to just Physics after they graduate.  The problem solving skills and mathematical proficiency gained in a Physics program is valuable for any career path a student may pursue.
