Acoustic Study Group

Northern Kentucky University
Nunn Drive  Highland Heights, Kentucky  41099

With funding provided via the Center for Integrative Natural Science and Mathematics (CINSAM) an acoustic studies group (ASG) has been formed at NKU. It is
anticipated that students majoring in  biology, physics, pre engineering, computer science, and mathematics would participate, given the nature of the projects
proposed. The proposed projects comprise a broad spectrum of activities and were selected to not only integrate and expand upon existing expertise and
research projects at NKU, but to initiate some new enterprises. Students will be exposed to not only topics outside the realm of classroom
experiences, but will have the opportunity to interface with various federal, state and local governments as well as commercial ventures in the
area. The formulation of the ASG establishes a new area of research at NKU. Unlike many areas of physics, acoustics is an area wherein students
with minimal backgrounds in physics can successfully participate. Students who have successfully completed the general physics sequence are eligible
for participation.

There are five studies that are proposed for the ASG:

1. Airport Noise Studies

2. Urban Noise Studies

3. Spectral Analysis of the World Freedom Bell

4. Underwater sounds as per the food chain (pending)

5. Collaborative work with Dr.  Jon Hastings (pending)

6. Hwy Noise (Barrier) study
