Urban Noise Study

In parallel with the Airport Study, a group of students will be investigating (collecting/analyzing/characterizing acoustic data) sources of urban noise pollution.  A city(s) in the Northern Kentucky area would be selected, in consort with ERMC.  Some cities in the area have already enacted noise abatement regulations and have experienced problems with the regulations.  Acoustic data will be collected in a variety of locations in and near the selected city, so as to establish a background level.  Work would then proceed in an attempt to identify point sources.  As an example, the City of Cincinnati has enacted a regulation aimed at controlling noise levels associated with boating traffic along the river front.  Data would be collected so as to characterize sources as to type of craft.  City/county governments are aware of the issue, but lack the expertise to analyze the extent of the problem.  The ASG will offer assistance to local agencies and will be equipped with monitoring equipment.
